This 4-week online course will teach the fundamentals of fiction writing. Each week, we will read a different short story to highlight the basic elements (plot, setting, description, perspective and characters), and respond to a writing prompt or two, to help students write their own stories. Every Monday, we will meet via Zoom for discussion and feedback (7:00 PM to 8:00 PM EST). We will also utilize the Blogger platform, for online posts and writing assignments.

Kevin Basl is a writer, musician and activist living near Ithaca, New York. He holds an MFA in fiction from Temple University, where he has taught writing. His work has been published in War, Literature and the Arts; Prometheus Dreaming; O'Dark Thirty; Miramar Poetry; Truthout, and elsewhere. He served in the U.S. Army as a mobile radar operator, twice deploying to Iraq. Since 2013, he has facilitated numerous art and writing workshops for service members, veterans and their communities, with Warrior Writers, Combat Paper NJ and Frontline Arts.

About Community Building Art Works: CBAW is a non-profit organization that provides poetry and art workshops led by professional artists. Its workshops have reached thousands of service members, veterans, and military and civilian healthcare workers at facilities including MedStar Washington Hospital Center, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, and George Washington University’s School of Nursing. Through online and in-person workshops, CBAW has taught expressive writing, mindfulness, and communication to participants struggling with the social isolation and loss of connection that often accompanies moral injury and post-traumatic stress.
